וולד
Yiddish
Etymology
Perhaps from Hebrew וָלָד (human fetus; young of an animal); compare Arabic وَلَد (walad). This is the etymology on which the spelling is based, though one would expect the pronunciation /ˈvɔl(ɜ)d/ from that according to Ashkenazi Hebrew. Alternatively, from a Slavic language; compare Russian плод (plod), Polish płód.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /vɫad/
