From the figurative use of պարտիմ (partim, I owe).

պարտեմ • (partem)  (aorist indicative պարտեցի)

  1. (transitive) to worst, to overcome, to vanquish, to conquer, to subjugate, to subdue
    պարտել զչարչարանսpartel zčʻarčʻaransto suffer with fortitude, to bear up against pain or torments
  2. (mediopassive, intransitive) to be conquered, to have the worst of it
    յապշութիւն պարտելyapšutʻiwn partelto be confounded, astounded, astonished, surprised
    պարտեցաւ պատերազմնpartecʻaw paterazmna part was subdued
