From Old Armenian *հօտաղ (*hōtał), from հօտ (hōt, flock) with an unknown element *աղ (*) which may be the suffix -աղ (-ał). Martirosyan explains *աղ (*) from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-lo-, from *peh₂- (to protect; to shepherd).
