Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Has been linked with Old Armenian հատ (hat, grain, seed) and with Hittite 𒄩𒀜𒋻 (ḫa-at-tar /⁠ḫattar⁠/), occurring in a list of grains or similar seed foodstuffs and possibly meaning "spelt".
