Etymology
An Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (glywpʾn' /grīwbān/, “neck-guard, gorge”), Classical Persian گریبان (girībān, “collar, the opening or breast of a garment; pocket”). For the constituents see Proto-Indo-Iranian *griHwáH (“neck”) and Old Armenian -պան (-pan, “keeper, protector”).
