Etymology

The first component is գետ (get, river). The -առ (-aṙ) is explained by Martirosyan as meaning “to flow, stream” and derived from Proto-Indo-European *srew-, whence also առու (aṙu). See also հաւառի (hawaṙi), կաւառն (kawaṙn).
