Etymology

Calque of Ancient Greek ἀπόστροφος (apóstrophos, accent of elision), from ἀπό (apó, away) + στρέφω (stréphō, to turn), which was translated as *ապադարձ (*apadarj), from ապա- (apa-, away; negative prefix) + դարձ (darj, turn), but written as ապաթարց (apatʻarcʻ) because of the dialectal pronunciation adopted by the Hellenizing School. See բդեդ (bded) for more examples of such a pronunciation.
