From Proto-Turkic *yagï (“enemy, war”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰍𐰃 (yaɣï, “enemy”), Karakhanid يَغٖى (yaɣï̄, “enemy”); Kazakh жау (jau, “enemy”), Khakas чаа (çaa, “war”), Ottoman Turkish یاغی (yağı, “stranger, enemy”).
