From Proto-Turkic *yag- (to rain). Compare with Kyrgyz жаа (jaa), Kazakh жауу (jauu), Bashkir яуыу (yawıw), Karachay-Balkar джауаргъа (cauarğa), Azerbaijani yağmaq, Turkish yağmak, Turkmen ýagmak, Salar yağ, Shor чаарға (čaarɣa), Khakas чаарға (çaarğa), Tuvan чаар (çaar), Tofa чаар, etc.
