ярғанат

Bashkir

Ярғанат

Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *yar (bat) + *kāynat (wing).

Alternatively explained as Proto-Turkic *yarï-kiaynat (membrane-wing), equivalent to Bashkir яры (yarı, membrane) + ҡанат (qanat, wing). However, this version is dismissed by some researchers as folk etymology.

Cognate with Kazakh жарғанат (jarğanat), Tatar ярканат (yarkanat), Kyrgyz жарганат (jarganat), Southern Altai јарганат (ǰarganat), Uzbek yorqanot, Turkmen ýarganat, Shor чарғанат (čarğanat), Khakas чарханат (çarxanat), Yakut сарыы кынат (sarıı kınat, bat).
