Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *yar- (“bat”) + *kāynat (“wing”). Cognate to Kyrgyz жарганат (jarganat), Karaim jarkanat, Karakalpak jarg'anat, Nogai ярганат (yarganat), Bashkir ярғанат (yarğanat), Tatar ярканат (yarkanat), Turkmen ýargānat, Northern Altai тьарганат (tʹarganat), Khakas чарханат (çarxanat), Shor чарғанат (čarɣanat), Yakut сарыы кынат (sarıı kınat), etc. Compare also Turkish yarasa, etc.
