From Proto-Mordvinic *čəčə~*čičə, inherited from Proto-Uralic *śečä (uncle). Cognate with Moksha щ- (šč-) in щене (ščeńe, uncle), Finnish setä, Northern Sami čeahci, Western Mari чӱчӧ (čüčö), Udmurt ӵуж (čuž).
