Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠲᠡᠩᠭᠢᠰ᠋ (teŋgis, a lake), from Middle Mongol 騰汲思 (/⁠teŋgis⁠/), from Common Turkic *teŋiz, from Proto-Turkic *teŋiŕ. Doublet of Чингис (Čingis, Genghis).
