From Proto-Mordvinic *śovəń, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śawe (clay, adobe). Akin to Finnish savi, Livonian sä’uv, Eastern Mari шун (šun), Komi-Zyrian сюн (śun), Northern Mansi [script needed] (śuĺ).
