From Proto-Mordvinic *śəjä~*śijä, possibly inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćejŋi (“jewellery, ornament”), whence Northern Sami čikŋa, Eastern Mari ший (šij). Compare also Finnish sievä (“cute, pretty”).
