Inherited from Old East Slavic пелынь (pelynĭ), from Proto-Slavic *pelynь f, *pelynъ m. Compare Bulgarian пели́н (pelín), Czech peluň, Polish piołun. Per Vasmer, a connection with пали́ть (palítʹ, “to burn, scorch”) and поле́но (poléno, “(burning)log”) is possible.
