Bulgarian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *nurati (a/j-conjugation).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈnurʲɐ]

Verb

ну́ря • (núrja) first-singular present indicative, impf (perfective ну́рна) (obsolete)

  1. (transitive) to dip, to nod
  2. (intransitive, figurative) to grub, to nuzzle the soil with one's snout (of swine and other animals)
  3. (reflexive with се) to dive into water

Usage notes

In the modern language, this verb has been superseded by its derivative гму́ря (gmúrja), гму́ркам (gmúrkam), formed under the influence of гу́рам (gúram, to bathe, to submerge in water).
