Inherited from Old East Slavic мудръ (mudrŭ), from Proto-Slavic *mǫdrъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mandras, from Proto-Indo-European *mondʰh₁ros, from *mendʰh₁- + *-rós. Cognate with Lithuanian mandrùs and Proto-Germanic *mundraz (German munter).
