Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *luňь. Cognate with Russian лунь (lunʹ, “harrier”), Church Slavonic лунь (lunĭ, “vulture”), Serbo-Croatian type of kite (bird), Slovene lȗnj (“kite (bird)”), Czech luňak (“kite (bird)”). Per Vasmer, possibly from earlier *lupňь from Proto-Slavic *lupiti (“to peel”).
