From *kökegün (gadfly), perhaps derived from Proto-Turkic *kȫk (blue).

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (kökägün, fly?); Tatar кигәвен (kigäwen, gadfly), Kyrgyz көгөөн (kögöön, gadfly), Uyghur كۆكۈيۈن (köküyün, gadfly), etc.
