Inherited from Old East Slavic желоза (želoza), from Proto-Slavic *želza, with distant assimilation жз > зз. Cognate with Ukrainian за́лоза (záloza), Belarusian зало́за (zalóza). Compare железа́ (železá), from Old East Slavic железа (železa), with different treatment of the liquid diphthong.
