Inherited from Old East Slavic *звѣрѧ́ (*zvěrę́), from Proto-Slavic *zvě̄rę̀. By surface analysis, звѣръ (zvěr) + -ѧ (-ja). Cognate with Czech zvíře, Old Polish źwirzę and Polish zwierzę.
