дразнити

Ukrainian

Alternative forms

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *drazniti. Doublet of дражни́ти (dražnýty). Cognate with Belarusian дражні́ць (dražnícʹ), Russian дразни́ть (draznítʹ), Bulgarian дра́зня (dráznja), Polish drażnić.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [drɐˈnːɪte]

Verb

дразни́ти • (draznýty) impf

  1. (transitive) to tease, to entice, to tempt
  2. (transitive) to tease, to poke fun of, to pick on, to chaff, to bother
  3. (transitive) to stimulate

Usage notes

  • дразни́ти (draznýty) and its derived verbs are semantically identical to дражни́ти (dražnýty) and its derivatives, however the latter and its derivatives are much more common both in colloquial and standard Ukrainian and should be preferred. With the only exception being подра́знити pf (podráznyty, to irritate) and подра́знювати impf (podráznjuvaty, to irritate), which do not have parallel forms with дражни́ти (dražnýty).
