Tuvan
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /arˈɣa/
Etymology 1
From Proto-Turkic *ărka (“back”). Originally referred to the slope behind a mountain. Due to the humidity of the northern side of Tuvan mountains which made them abundant with trees, this word eventually became synonymous with mountainous forests in general. Compare Tofa арha (“northern slope of a mountain”).
Semantic development: "back" → "back of a mountain" → "mountainous forest".
