From Proto-Indo-European *gʰelu-, *gʰelew- ,*gʰelōw- (“tortoise”). Related to χέλυς (khélus, “tortoise”). Compare to Proto-Slavic *žьlvъ, whence Old Church Slavonic желꙑ (žely, “turtle”), Polish żółw (“tortoise”).
