From Byzantine Greek χάνω (khánō), developed from ἔχασα (ékhasa), ἐχάσα (ekhása), from the Koine Greek aorist *ἐχάωσα (*ekháōsa) (infinitive χαῶσαι (khaôsai)) of a root *χαώνω (*khaṓnō), from the verb χαόω (khaóō), χαῶ (khaô), from Ancient Greek χάος (kháos). Cognate with Mariupol Greek хану (xanu).
