φλέως

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • φλοῦς (phloûs) Ionic

Etymology

For this word, DELG assumes *φληϝ-ο- (*phlēw-o-), beside *φλωϝ-ο- (*phlōw-o-) for φλόος (phlóos, rind, skin, slough). Often derived from the verb φλέω (phléō, to overflow, flood), but Chantraine adds the word may just as well be a loan; this would agree with Beekes's suggestion of a Pre-Greek origin of the noun.
