Learned borrowing from Katharevousa τοπωνύμι(ον) created in analogy to Koine Greek ἐπωνύμιον (epōnúmion, “surname”) + -ο (Standard Modern Greek neuter suffix).[1] Compound of τοπ- (τόπος) (top- (tópos), “place”) + -ωνύμιο (-onýmio, “-onym”).[2]
