Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek πυριμάχος (purimákhos, resisting fire) with a faulty recessive accent in the pattern of αξιόμαχος (axiómachos).[1] By surface analysis, πυρί- (pyrí-) + -μαχος (-machos). See πυρ n (pyr, fire) (formal) & μάχη f (máchi, combat).
