πάπυρος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unknown.

Perhaps from Egyptian, since writing on it is widely believed to have originated in Egypt, but no Egyptian cognate is known.

Beekes notes that the suffix *-ῡρ- is reconstructed for Pre-Greek.
