From Proto-Hellenic *kūrós, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱuh₁-ró-s, from *ḱewh₁- (to swell, be strong), the same root of κυέω (kuéō, to be pregnant), κῦμα (kûma, wave), Sanskrit शवस् (śavas, strength, power) and Irish curadh (hero).
