κώδεια
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- κώδεα (kṓdea), κωδία (kōdía), κωδύα (kōdúa), κώδυια (kṓduia)
Etymology
No cognates. Furnée showed that the variants point to a Pre-Greek origin; in addition, he compares words for "cup", like κώδων (kṓdōn, “bell”), κοτύλη (kotúlē, “cup”), κόνδυ (kóndu, “cup”), κώθων (kṓthōn, “Laconian drinking vessel”), but also Etruscan 𐌒𐌖𐌕𐌖𐌌 (qutum, “kind of vessel”).
