Etymology

From Ancient Greek καρχαρίας (karkharías), from κάρχαρος (kárkharos, “sharp, jagged”). Possibly related to κάρκαρος (kárkaros, “coarse, rough”), but also compare χάραξ (khárax, “pointed stake”) and χαράσσω (kharássō, “to sharpen”); also Old Armenian կարկառ (karkaṙ, “heap of stones”).
