Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἐπάγγελμα (epángelma)[1] (Hellenistic sense "profession", ancient "promise"), and semantic loan from French profession.[2] By surface analysis, επ- (ep-, upon) + αγγέλλω (angéllo, Ι announce) + -μα (-ma, ing). Calque of Latin professiō (avowal, public declaration).
