From a Semitic source cognate to Hebrew בּוּץ (būṣ, “byssus”) and Aramaic בּוּצָא (būṣā, “byssus”), from Proto-Semitic *būṣ- (“fibrous grass, rush etc.”). Compare also Old Armenian բեհեզ (behez, “byssus”).
