βάναυσος
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Generally taken as an haplology from *βαύναυσος, in turn a compound of βαῦνος (baûnos, “furnace”) and αὔω (aúō, “to scoop, light a fire”). Beekes disregards this proposal as folk etymology and suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
