βάναυσος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Generally taken as an haplology from *βαύναυσος, in turn a compound of βαῦνος (baûnos, furnace) and αὔω (aúō, to scoop, light a fire). Beekes disregards this proposal as folk etymology and suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
