Greek

Etymology

From Byzantine Greek ἀπόφαση (apóphasē, decree, ruling) from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓πόφᾰσῐς (apóphasis, decision, sentence, verdict), ἀπο- (apo-, away, from, off) + φᾰ́σῐς (phásis, appearance; denunciation; accusation), from ἀποφαίνω (apophaínō, make known, declare; produce, render; denounce), root verb φαίνω (phaínō, bring to light; appear; denounce) from Proto-Hellenic *pʰáňňō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to shine). Only partially cognate to Latin apophasis, English apophasis, from the identical form ᾰ̓πόφᾰσῐς (apóphasis, denial, negation), root *bʰeh₂- (to say) via root verb φημί (phēmí, to speak).
