Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἀπεχθάνομαι (apekhthánomai, “I am hated”) also with transitive sense since Hellenistic times. From ἀπεχθής (apekhthḗs, “hateful”) from ἀπ(ό) (“with emphasizing sense”) + ἔχθος n (ékhthos, “hatred”). Morphologically απ- + εχθ‑ + ‑άνομαι.
