Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀλαλάζω (“"war-cry, shout aloud”), onomatopoeic from the ancient cry 'alala'. Unrelated to αλαλιάζω (alaliázo) and similar words from λαλώ (laló, “talk”).
