Symbol
˗
- (IPA, dated, after a letter with a descender) retracted articulation.
- (IPA, dated) a mid, level tone.
Usage notes
(tone): The mark is placed before the word or syllable that bears the tone. This symbol is effectively obsolete, having been replaced by Chao tone letters and tone diacritics.
(retraction): More recently, the diacritic tends to be placed above the letter with a descender, but in Unicode this is not distinguished from a macron. See ⟨◌̄⟩.
