From a Proto-Indo-European root *ḱēy(w)-, *ḱyē(w)- (“grey, dark”), with a Baltic extension *-m-. Compare Latvian sirms (“gray”).
The closest cognate is Proto-Slavic *śěrъ, further cognates are Old Irish cīar (“dark”), Proto-Germanic *hairaz (“grey”), and Albanian surmë.
