Inherited from Proto-Slavic *(š)četъka, *ščetь, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwek- (“to gape”). See also Sanskrit श्वञ्चते (śvañcate, “to become open”), उच्छ्वङ्क (ucchvaṅka, “cleaving open, gaping”).
