Artwork for the album was done by Paul Romano to which coincides to We Came as Romans' positive message as explained by guitarist Joshua Moore that the lyrical themes on To Plant a Seed are based-up spreading this message.[1] A deluxe edition of the album was released on January 18, 2011 which includes one bonus track and a DVD entitled To Plant a DVD.[2]
The songs "Dreams" and "Intentions" were re-recorded from the band's Dreams EP.

[The] first full-length release by We Came as Romans is a hardcore album with a twist. ... Those looking to bang their head will still find plenty of traditional hardcore elements here, particularly the horror-movie screaming of frontman Dave Stevens, but To Plant a Seed is more concerned with establishing the band's unique identity.
