Tia Corine Thompson Shultz,[1] known professionally as TiaCorine, is an American rapper and songwriter from Winston-Salem, North Carolina.[2] She is best known for her singles "Lotto" and "FreakyT".[3]

Early life

Tia Shultz was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to a Shoshone mother and a Japanese-African American father.[4][5] She was exposed to a diverse range of music in her childhood. In the fourth grade, Shultz began performing at local talent shows and started taking flute and piano lessons.[4]  She attended Winston-Salem State University and graduated with a degree in Exercise Physiology, originally wanting to be a physician’s assistant.[4][6]

Career

2017-2021: 34Corine

In 2017, she released her first major single, "Cabbage" with OG Spliff.[7] In late 2019, she signed to the South Coast Music Group record label.[4] On September 4, 2020, she released her debut EP, 34Corine.[3] The album featured the song "Lotto", which received significant traction on TikTok.[3] On May 14, 2021, she released her debut album, The Saga of 34Corine, featuring guest appearances from Kenny Beats, DaBaby, and Frais006.[8] On September 17, 2021, she released the single "Bo Time", inspired by her time working at Bojangles.[9] On November 27, 2021, she released her second EP, Pussy.[10]

2022-present: I Can't Wait

On September 9, 2022, she released her second album, I Can't Wait, featuring guest appearances from UnoTheActivist, Kenny Beats, and Tony Shhnow.[11] The album featured the song "FreakyT", which received significant traction on TikTok.[9] In January 2023, it was announced she would join Key Glock's 2023 Glockoma Tour.[3] On April 21, 2023, she released a remix to "FreakyT" featuring rapper Latto.[9] In June 2023, she was announced as member of the 2023 XXL Freshmen Class.[12]

Artistry

TiaCorine has stated that the music her parents played to her as a child are a major influence on her, including artists such as Queen, Teena Marie, Sade, Sugarhill Gang, A Tribe Called Quest, Luther Vandross, Aaliyah, Michael Jackson, The Notorious B.I.G., and Ginuwine.[13][14][15] She describes her music style as "anime trap."[16]

Personal life

Shultz has a daughter, born in 2016.[4][16]

She is a fan of anime; her favorite shows include Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, Pokemon, and Sailor Moon.[6][13] She is a fan of streetwear fashion, and is known to wear a diamond chain necklace of Kirby.[6][17]
