Sunwise Media is an American production company founded by Ri-Karlo Handy.[1]
History
The company was founded by Ri-Karlo Handy and Elverage Allen in 2018. The company has co-produced the Gospel Radio Awards with SOAR Radio for The Word Network since 2018.[2]
The company produced Hope Village: The Story of a Hope Dealer in 2019. It is a feature-length documentary about Lucy Hall, who has run the Hope Mary Hall Freedom House, which offers drug rehabilitation programs to women and children, since 1996.[3] Hope Village was screened at a number of film festivals, and an educational tour based around the film was held at colleges.[4] The film won gold at the 2019 Spotlight Awards.[3]
Sunwise Media produces Unsolved History, a series of documentary films. The first in the series,[5] Life of a King, follows the life of civil rights leader and minister A. D. King. The concept of the film came from an idea by A.D.'s daughter Alveda King. It is narrated by Ed Gordon. Sunwise partnered with Hearst Media Production Group in 2023 to produce diverse Saturday morning programming aimed at Black audiences,[7] which became Harlem Globetrotters: Play it Forward, hosted by Craig Robinson. The series, which premiered on NBC on October 1, 2022, explores the history and community outreach of the Harlem Globetrotters.[8] It was nominated for an Emmy at the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards.[9]
The company produced Rebuilding Black Wall Street: Greenwood, a documentary hosted by Morris Chestnut that explores the reconstruction of Greenwood District, Tulsa after the Tulsa race massacre.[10][11] The series was produced in partnership with GroupM Motion Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery.[12] It premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network on September 29, 2023.[10]
