Clint Massey (born February 18, 1997), better known professionally as RondoNumbaNine, is an American rapper and convicted murderer from Chicago, Illinois. He became popular in the Chicago drill scene in 2013 alongside fellow rapper and friend L’A Capone.
In 2016, Massey was sentenced to 39 years in prison for the 2014 murder of a Chicago cab driver. He is scheduled to be released in 2053.[2]
Early life and career
Clint Massey was born on February 18, 1997, and was raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. His older brother is a rapper named Big Swirl. At a young age, he joined the Black Disciples street gang. In 2011, Massey started rapping, and he released his first mixtape the following year. In 2013, he would build a buzz in the Chicago drill scene as he released songs with fellow rapper and friend L’A Capone, including “Shooters” and “Play For Keeps.” Rondo would also release songs with Lil Durk and in November 2013, Lupe Fiasco was featured on his song “Life Of A Savage.”[3][4]
In October 2013, Rondo released his mixtape “Real Nigga For Life,” with a sequel, named “Real Nigga 4 Life 2,” being released in February 2014. The mixtape included guest appearances from fellow Chicago rappers Cdai, Edai, and Fredo Santana.[5][6] Rondo's career was cut short after he and Cdai were charged with the murder of a cab driver in March 2014. Rondo was sentenced to 39 years while Cdai was sentenced to 38 years.[7]
Legal issues
In December 2013, the Chicago Police Department issued a bulletin after Rondo posted a photo on Instagram with him holding what appeared to be a rocket launcher. No charges were ever filed against the rapper.[8]
Murder of Javan Boyd
On February 21, 2014, Rondo and fellow rapper Courtney “Cdai” Ealy attended a party with some friends at the Wentworth Garden Housing Projects on the South Side of Chicago. Rondo and Cdai left the party early with a woman driving. After they left, a group of women got into an argument over a song, and during the argument, someone fired a shot into the air. A call was made to Cdai about the altercation. According to witnesses, Cdai and Rondo intended to “see who shot at them” and “deal with the matter.” As they were driving, Rondo and Cdai spotted 28 year old taxi driver Javan Boyd, who was sitting in his car waiting to pick up a woman. The two got out of the car to approach Boyd and asked him if he was from the neighborhood. When Boyd replied that he was, he was shot 7 times. Boyd later died at the hospital.[9][10]
Rondo was arrested for first-degree murder in connection with Boyd's murder on March 7, 2014, and was being held on a $2 million bond.[11] Cdai was arrested on the same charge ten days later and was being held on a $1 million bond. According to police, Cdai and Rondo's fingerprints were found on Boyd's car, and Cdai’s cell phone was found near Boyd’s car.[12][13]
In March 2016, Rondo and Cdai were convicted of Boyd's murder. Cdai was sentenced to 38 years in May 2016 and Rondo was sentenced to 39 years in July 2016. Both lost appeals in 2019.[14][15][16][17]
