Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu (born 16 October 1999) is a Cuban-born Turkish volleyball player,[1] who plays for Fenerbahçe Opet and the Turkey women's national volleyball team .[2]

She was a member of the Cuba women's national volleyball team and was part of the Cuban national team at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Italy.[3] Since 2023, she has been playing in the Turkey women's national volleyball team.[4]

Personal life

Melissa Vargas was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba on 16 October 1999.[5] In 2021, she acquired Turkish citizenship.[4]

She won the Best Opposite award in the 2014 U23 Pan-American Cup[6] as well as Best Outside Hitter at Central American Caribbean Games 2014, Pan American Cup and Games 2015, Best Scorer at Final Four Cup 2015, NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six 2015, and Champions League 2018/2019. Vargas also won Best Server at Pan American Cup 2015, Turkey Volleyball Women's League 2018 and 2019, and Chinese League 2021 and 2022.[7]

After her naturalization for Turkey in 2021, she had to wait two years to be included in the Turkey women's national volleyball team. In 2023, she started to play for the Turkey national team, and participated at the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League.[4]
