Iowa Basement Tapes (IBT) is an American weekly hour-long radio program created by host Kristian Day and produced in collaboration with KFMG-LP (98.9 FM).[1] It is broadcast on numerous public radio, college radio and community radio stations in the state of Iowa and is also available as a free weekly podcast. Primarily a music program focusing on punk rock and DIY music from Iowa, it has also featured interviews, memoirs, and field recordings. The first episode aired on July 5, 2018, at 9PM on KFMG-LP.[2] In December 2018, the program began distributing through Siouxland Public Media on KWIT (90.3 FM) in Sioux City, Iowa and northwestern Iowa along with its satellite station, KOJI (90.7 FM) in Okoboji, Iowa airing on Friday evenings at 11PM.[3] On September 30, 2023, the program began syndicating on KWLC (1240 AM) in Decorah, Iowa airing on Saturday nights at 8PM.[4]

Format

Each week's show opens with the sound of a television station sign off with the "Star Spangled Banner" starting to play and night insects chirping in the background. This follows with the sound of someone rustling through cassette tapes, inserting one, and hitting play.[5]

A standard one-hour music episode will play between twelve and fourteen songs.[5] A one-hour interview-based episode will play between five and six songs.[6]

Music

The music of IBT focuses on Iowa originated punk rock, garage, metal, and electronic.[7] All songs are credited during the show and are included on the show notes of the podcast archives.[8]

Adaptaions

Podcast

All episodes are available online in two formats: a free RealAudio stream during the broadcast from both KFMG-LP[9] and KWIT-KOJI[10] websites, and DRM-free podcast through Apple Podcasts,[11] Spotify,[12] and Amazon.[13]

Music Archive

In January 2020, IBT host Kristian Day created an online archive of Iowa punk, metal, and DIY music on Bandcamp called the Iowa Basement Tapes Bandcamp Archive.[7] It was started with Day's own collection of tapes and CD-Rs but has since had multiple contributors including many of the bands and artists themselves.[14][15]

The River Cities Reader explored some of the titles in a blog post September 8th, 2020, writing "The bands typically predate digital-media interfaces such as Bandcamp, the de facto home for self-released music these days, so their music ended up on small editions of CDRs or cassette tapes. But thanks to Day's archiving efforts, these releases have a centralized home on Bandcamp now and are fully streamable for your Iowa DIY scene-exploring pleasure".[16]
