In Stars and Time is a 2023 role-playing video game developed by insertdisc5 and published by Armor Games Studios. The Player controls a party of adventurers, one of which is stuck in a time loop.
Gameplay
After a long journey, a group of adventurers finally arrive near the King's castle, the former House of Change, where many people practised the country's religion. The King has cast a powerful curse, which has started slowly freezing the entire country in time. The player first assumes control of Siffrin in the small town of Dormont on the day before the party enters the King's castle. The next day, the group enters the castle and Siffrin is killed by a trap, looping them back to the day before. The player controls Siffrin as he attempts to lead the party through the castle to defeat the King. The player can make use of the ability to loop in time to solve varying problems like traps and finding the location of hidden items. The game uses a turn-based combat system similar to that of EarthBound or Omori. The player can use different crafts (magic) to battle a multitude of Sadnesses which are the game's main enemies. The party can also use special jackpot attacks to unleash big damage and heal the party after using enough attacks of the same type. The graphics are black and white, and use a drawn art style.[2]
Development
Armor Games Studios released In Stars and Time on November 20, 2023.[3]
Reception
In Stars and Time received positive reviews on Metacritic.[4] RPGFan praised the characters, story, combat, and gameplay, though they said the time loops can make it repetitive and linear.[1] TechRadar called it "unmissable" and praised the worldbuilding, characters, and story. They said the loops do not feel too repetitive, but they found some of the required backtracking tedious.[5] Describing it as beautiful and strange, Nintendo Life found In Stars and Time difficult but recommended it to fans of Undertale and EarthBound.[6] Though they praised the characters and uniqueness of In Stars and Time's gameplay, Nintendo World Report criticized the game mechanics for having what they felt was an odd progression system, too much repetition, and lengthy dialogue that popped up at unnecessary points.[7]
