Humane, Inc. (stylized as humane and hu.ma.ne[1]) is an American consumer electronics and fitness company founded in 2018 by Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno.[2][3] The company created and produces the Ai Pin,[4] which launched on November 9, 2023.[5][6]
History
Humane was founded by husband and wife pair Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno[7] in 2018; both were former managers at Apple Inc.[3] Initially the startup was in stealth,[8] came out of stealth in 2021, and revealed their product functionality in 2023.[9]
The company raised $11 million in July 2019. Salesforce Founder & CEO Marc Benioff participated in the round.[10] The company then raised a $30M Series A in September 2020. OpenAI Founder & CEO Sam Altman led the round.[11] In July 2021, the company raised a $100M Series B, with backing from Tiger Global and SoftBank Group.[12] In March 2023, the company raised a Series C, with investors including Qualcomm, Microsoft, LG, Volvo, and Salesforce.[13] Around the same time, the company announced partnerships with Microsoft and OpenAI.[14] By November 2023, the company raised $230 million.[15]
The company demonstrated the features of the then-unnamed wearable device during a TED Talk in May 2023,[16][17] and it was showcased by Coperni at Paris Fashion Week in September.[18]
In July 2023, Humane announced the name of their wearable device would be called the "Ai Pin".[19] The device was formally announced on November 9, 2023, and sales started November 16; it will ship in early 2024.[15]
